Five things you should know before your cosmetic dental surgery procedure

Veneers are not instant

A lot of commercials for cosmetic dental surgery will show a person with crooked or yellow teeth walk into the dentist's office and come back out an hour later smiling with a mouth full of straight white perfection.  While that is a good marketing trick, it is far from reality. Getting veneers entails several trips to the dentist office, a lot of patience and a little bit of pain.

Insurance covers some procedures, but not all

Any trip to the dentist is going to hit you in the pocket, but did you know that you can save in the dentist office just like anywhere else? There are some cosmetic dental surgery procedures that are covered or partially covered by most health insurance plans. For the amount that is not covered, the majority of dental offices will offer you a package rate to make the work affordable- but only if you inquire.

Dental products range from office to office

In healthcare, the majority of procedures are standard regardless of which hospital you go to, or what doctor you see, when it comes to cosmetic dental surgery, it is much different. The dentist has a variety of new products to choose from on a regular basis that just about every dentist uses a different line up of products. It is important to know what is going in your mouth in the event that you are not comfortable with certain materials, new products, or if you are expecting a certain look once your procedure is complete.

Make sure you ask your dentist as many questions as you need to be sure that the end result is the one you want. Cosmetic dental surgery isn't easy, so it's always better to get it right the first time to prevent additional visits.

Cosmetic dental surgery and restorative dental surgery are different

All dentist must learn the same basic techniques when they obtain their license, but the aims of a cosmetic dentist and a restorative dentist are not the same.  Both types certainly care for their patients and want them to have healthy teeth, but where a restorative dentist is more focused on the function of the teeth, a cosmetic dentist is more concerned with the finished look of the teeth.

It doesn’t have to hurt

The term surgery seems like it's filled with long-term recovery and lots of pain, but in most cases, there is very little pain involved with cosmetic dental surgery.  A good cosmetic dentist should be able to complete any procedure with minimal pain, both during the procedure, and after the Novocaine wears off.

Always make sure to do your research and ensure that your doctor is properly licensed and bonded prior to completing any work, and be sure to ask as many questions as you need to feel comfortable with your cosmetic dental surgery procedure.
